3D printed steel bridge - robots “draw” steel structures in 3D, print a bridge over water in the center of Amsterdam. This groundbreaking, cost-effective robotic technology can 3D print beautiful, functional objects in almost any form such as an intricate, ornate metal bridge

What's the problem?

There is a lot of interest in using 3D printing to provide new ways to construct innovative designs to solve unusual problems. Finding ways to make strong, lightweight and beautiful structures is an important use of 3D printing. Now that metal and other materials can be used for printing there are many more possibilities.
  • Ask - can 3D printing technology be adapted to building structures such as bridges using metal and composite materials?
  • Imagine - What design techniques can be adapted to provide adequate strength and reduce the amount of material used? Honeycomb and wire frames are construction techniques frequently used with other construction methods.
  • Design, Build - using additive printing techniques, the materials can be created with many strategically located empty spaces. Less material is used and the structure is just as strong as it would have been if it were make from Solid pieces of material.
  • Improve - As printing devices, materials and designs are developed, improvements are being made to the structures produced.
